Thorpe Salvin Parish Council CCTV Project

For the past 2 years the Thorpe Salvin Parish Council have been engaging with the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) regarding the provision of a CCTV scheme for the Parish.

Following a survey undertaken by the RMBC they were able to provide a quotation to the Parish Council that was substantially lower than previously obtained prices that has now made the project viable.

Having secured a level of funding from the Ward Councillors Devolved Budget, to supplement an appropriate level of funding from the Parish Council, the project has been approved and installation will take place late August / early September 2024.

The scheme will involve a total of 4 CCTV cameras being mounted from steel lamp posts covering the 4 roads entering/exiting the village of Thorpe Salvin (Worksop Road, Common Road, Ladyfield Road and Harthill Road).

The primary purpose of the CCTV is to help detect and prevent crime. The footage can only be accessed by either RMBC or South Yorkshire Police and is only viewed if a crime has been committed or is believed about to be committed. The system is not monitored 24/7 and will not be set up to capture any footage of any private property.

The scheme being employed is one that can be readily expanded at a future date should additional funds become available and should the need arise for further cameras within the Parish. There are two major requirements when considering where cameras can be installed:

  1. they must be on a steel lamp post and the camera is then powered by the streetlamp electrical supply.
  2. cameras cannot be installed on private buildings even if the owner would be willing to give their consent.

Statistically areas that adopt CCTV cameras see a fall in crime committed by circa 16% (figure provided by RMBC), and recently within the village we have seen thefts and burglaries take place. Several villages in the area of South Yorkshire that have installed CCTV cameras have reported a drop in crime.

As a Parish Council we accept that we cannot satisfy everyone with everything that we do, however we strive to accommodate the vast majority, and with this scheme we do cover almost 80% of parishioners that reside within our boundaries.

Should you have any queries regarding the CCTV scheme please contact any of the Parish Councillors.
